New Public Library in Bernate Ticino
Open competition
Municipality of Bernate Ticino – Bernate Ticino (MI) – 2022
Architect: Annacarla Secchi

A permeable building.
The new library is a simple building, conceived as an open element towards the surrounding park. Its accessibility and structural characteristics allow for different internal spatial arrangements according to changing needs.
The new library project plays a central role in enhancing the environmental system of Bernate Ticino. From the Naviglio Grande, the route gradually ascends towards Parco I Maggio, reaching the terrace of the new library. Along the way, it connects the town’s most significant public and communal spaces.

The Project – Site Plan
The Building
The structure of the new building consists entirely of a timber frame resting on a reinforced concrete plinth that distributes the loads to the foundation soil. The closely spaced timber structural elements allow for more slender members, contributing not only to a freer and more flexible internal layout, but also to the architectural expression of the building itself.
The “box” housed within the main building is also made of concrete and accommodates the toilets and storage facilities.
